"Wealth in the new regime flows directly from innovation, not optimization; that is, wealth is not gained by perfecting the known, but by imperfectly seizing the unknown."

Kevin Kelly

People often use the term 'natural born leader'. However, we now need to understand that neither leaders nor leadership theory are borne in a vacuum. We will analyze these variables for impacts on leadership theory.

The Culture Perspective of Leadership - Nu Leadership Series
By Daryl Green

"Wealth in the new regime flows directly from innovation, not optimization; that is, wealth is not gained by perfecting the known, but by imperfectly seizing the unknown."

Kevin Kelly

People often use the term 'natural born leader.'However, we now need to understand that neither leaders nor leadership theory are borne in a vacuum. We will analyze these variables for impacts on leadership theory.

For this presentation, leadership theory is seen through the cultural framework of the times because leaders make decisions within this constraint. First, Culture in this context is limited to those specific economic, social, and political influences that impact leadership decisions. The technological influence is taken in consideration under the economic variable.

Second, these variables are very integrated. The economic variable relates to the relationship of people and resources. Every society faces economic challenges because of scarcity of resources. Leadership thought has been influenced by this factor because the social allocation of resources are often considered in the decision process.

The social variable then refers to the relationship of people to each other in a society. Since America has undergone several demographic changes, the culture values have also changed. People are forced to work together. Leadership thought is found operating under this cultural parameter.

Finally, the political variable is the relation of the individual to the government and also pertains to the social order of the legal system. Leadership thought is affected by the form of government, by individual rights, and by the ability to appeal within the legal framework. Therefore, we see that leadership thought has changed because our culture has changed, and this has influenced the leadership paradigm.

G.A.S. Up Your Organizational Leadership
By Leanne Hoagland-Smith

Leadership is recognized as the number one driver in organizational success. Without effective leadership organizations fail to capitalize on the enormous opportunities available to them each and every day. As you look to leadership development, consider these 3 cornerstones:

  • Goals
  • Attitudes
  • Self leadership skills

GOALS Of course your organization has goals. Every organization has them. But can you answer with 100% confidence that all your employees consistently achieve both personal and professional goals? From my experience and research, less than 5% of individuals know of to:

  • Write effective goal statements
  • Track and monitor their goals
  • Have a personal action plan for success

ATTITUDES Henry Ford said it best: Whether you think you can or you think you cannot, either way you are right. Most people live in what I call the Land of Misery. They are so comfortable being miserable because of negative self talk and their own experiences that they embrace neutral to negative attitudes. Attitudes are demonstrated through our behaviors. To become great leaders means that we need great and positive attitudes.

SELF LEADERSHIP SKILLS Beyond the abilities to set and achieve goals and maintain great attitudes, organizational leadership needs to focus on developing self leadership skills within all individuals. For it is these soft people skills or what some call strong interpersonal skills that generate strong responses in others. However until someone can consistently and effectively lead himself or herself, he or she will never be able to lead anyone else.

When these 3 critical cornerstones of goals, attitudes and self-leadership skills are integrated into organizational leadership, amazing results will quickly appear. Why not give it a try and see what happens.
